Hold onto Your hair with Hair Loss Treatments For Men

by Anthony Devlin on 03/12/2009

If you are a man who is losing his hair, most likely it has been a very gradual process. Most male pattern baldness is. Most men try to overlook it as long as possible until it is too late and they have already lost the majority of their hair. This can make them look older than they really are. Instead of waiting, men should consider hair loss treatments. This is because most work much more effectively if they are started when there is still a large amount of hair left. Here is a look at some of the hair loss treatments that are available.

There are many different methods of treating hair loss including surgery and products which are applied to the scalp. Minoxidil is a generic drug that has been proven to encourage hair regrowth and slow the loss of the hair that you have. If you cannot find it under its generic name, you may be able to find the brand name product Rogaine, which many people have heard of. In order to use topical products they are applied to the scalp and rubbed in, then allowed to sit on the scalp for a prescribed amount of time.

Although many men have noticed a real improvement in the amount of hair that they have, they may notice one or two negative side effects including scalp irritation. This can be made worse considering it needs to remain on the skin for at least thirty minutes and often up to four hours for maximum effect. You may also find that many preparations are not only pricey, but they must be used continuously or else the hair loss will resume and any hair that has regrown will be lost as well.

If you don’t want to continually pay out money for hair products you should consider a permanent, surgical solution. Three surgical options are hair flap surgery, hair transplants and hair plugs. If you are having hair transplants and hair plugs, this means that strips of skin or small sections of hair are being taken from elsewhere on the head or body and moved to areas where the hair has thinned out the most. Hair flaps are more drastic and involve stretching skin which has a good hair covering in order to cover areas where hairless skin has been removed. When the hair flap is sewn into place, the hairless areas have been obscured and your hair looks full and thick again.

Each of these procedures has its own risks and potential side effects. Each needs to be performed by a qualified professional. Risks can include reactions to anaesthetics or other medications used in the procedure. They can also include infection or, in some cases, a failure for the plugs or transplant to take hold. There may also be scarring in some cases.

Hair loss is so devastating that many men will still opt to undergo treatments regardless of the side effects. By knowing about the advantages and problems of each method you can be confident that the method you choose is the one that is the right one for you.
