Hair loss may result from a combination of multiple factors. However, in most cases, this condition is triggered by hormonal changes, medications, birth control pills, infections, certain diseases, stress and genetic factors. In most cases, hair loss is caused by androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness in men and female pattern baldness in woman. This condition may occur because of a fungal infection, compulsive hair pulling, hypothyroidism, secondary syphilis, iron deficiency, chronic cutanous lupus erythematosus, dissecting cellulitis, chemotherapy, etc.

Hormones regulate body temperature and are responsible for the maintenance of numerous organs and systems. Any abnormal hormonal reaction that takes place in our body increases the risk of hair loss. Pregnancy, childbirth, perimenopause and menopause, thyroid disease and other similar processes trigger the overproduction of certain hormones. Birth control pills have the same effect, increasing testosterone levels.

People suffering from thyroid disease (hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism) are often affected by hair loss. With proper treatment, the loss of hair can be reversed.

Low protein diets and poor nutrition are responsible not only for hair loss, but for many other health problems. A balanced diet, rich in minerals and vitamins is essential for the health of our hair, being recommended. Foods that provide enough protein, vitamin E and fiber stimulate hair growth and improve the overall health condition.

It’s highly recommended the consumption of foods rich in protein, such as soy, light meat, diary products, egg yolks, almonds, hazelnuts and oily fish. Eating fruits and vegetables at every meal is extremely important. Because iron deficiency may produce hair loss, it’s indicated to take iron pills.

Recent studies have shown that stress and psychical tension trigger hormonal reactions in the body, causing hair loss. Stress increases the concentration of hormones such as cortisol and testosterone, which affects the hair roots. This condition is temporary if the person affected is not predisposed to genetic or Androgenic Alopecia.

Permanent waves, bleaches, straighteners, dyes and most hair styling treatments damage our hair, making it weaker. This happens especially if there were used inadequate products and powerful chemical substances or if the solution is left on too long.

Now that you know what causes hair loss, you should repair the damage that may have been done to your hair. Adopt a healthy diet, stop using chemical products for a while and try to stay away from stress, if possible.
