Remedies For Thinning Hair

by Arthur Collins on 21/11/2009

It is estimated that the majority of men will experience some kind of thinning hair or hair loss in their lifetimes. In fact estimates that over 60% of men will experience thinning hair.

The market for hair loss and hair thickening products is estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars every single year. This is not surprising given the emotional attachment we often have with our hair and the resultant loss of self esteem that some feel when their hair starts thinning or falling out.

Poor blood circulation, stress, a change in hormones and adverse negative reactions to medications are just a few of the reasons why hair might start to thin or fall out completely.

The FDA has only given its approval to the treatments Minoxidil and Finasteride to combat hair loss. They have both undergone rigorous testing to be able to gain this approval. Minoxidil can be used by males and females and Finasteride can be used just by men.

Finasteride works by inhibiting the production of a hormone called Dht. Dht attacks the hair follicle and makes in shrink. Dht is produced by testosterone. Finasteride is taken in tablet form, daily. Minoxidil works by increasing the flow of blood to the hair follicle, this is believed to be able to slow down or halt further thinning and hair loss in some cases.

Of course there are thousands of other products that claim to be able to halt further hair loss, regrow and thicken hair working in various ways. If one does decide to try one of these products the ingredients contained in them should be investigated beforehand for health and safety reasons.

Other non medical remedies to thinning hair and hair loss include the use of cosmetic hair thickening products and wigs (hairpieces).

Hairpieces or wigs have come on a lot in the past decade. The best ones are virtually undetectable even up close and blend in a seamless fashion with one’s own hair. At the top end they can run into several thousand dollars in price and might require an ongoing maintenance fee.

Thinning hair can also be thickened by using cosmetic hair thickening products such as hair thickening sprays, mousses, conditioners and fibers. The results can be very effective cosmetically. Usually they thicken hair in a way similar to how eye lashes are thickened by mascara. A thickening agent is usually contained in these products which binds to and thickens hair and improves volume and thickness. Of course, as with any products one should examine the ingredients in them carefully before usage.
