Why is it that men can get away with scalp hair loss and women can’t? There are jokes galore about balding men, but a balding woman? Hair is a girl’s crowning glory. It’s part of who she is. Hair is something that women fuss over every hour of the day and spend lots of money on.
Psychologists have studied the reaction of both men and women who have suffered extensive hair loss. Men are upset about it and it causes stress, there’s no question. But women’s suffering and emotional trauma about hair loss can be much worse than a man’s. While a man will just gripe about it, women will feel shame and confusion. They worry more about how they’ll be regarded socially. It’s a blow to a woman’s pride and self esteem.
When men find that they’re losing their hair, there’s a vast network of hair restoration places, products and family to offer them support. A man’s wife can pat her husband’s hand and reassure him that he’s still a real ‘man’. But when a woman starts losing her hair, no one will joke about it or look for a silver lining. They don’t have a support system. It’s a cause for shame.

It comes out in big handfuls in the shower, but usually once a baby is weaned, that hair will grow back. Hormone deficiencies such as hypothyroidism can be treated with medication. Follicle damage or hair damage due to over processing and tight ponytails or corn rows may be reversible and OCD conditions such as irrational hair plucking may be controlled, too.
These are preventable and treatable types of hair loss which can be upsetting but controllable. It’s hair loss that can’t be stopped that is particularly devastating. Alopecia, which is unexplainable, sometimes hereditary, that is sometimes irreversible. Hair loss or thinning because of the aging process can be upsetting as well.
There are a variety of hair care products that have produced dramatic results in women and men. However, women should run to their dermatologist if they suspect hair loss is not temporary.
