Alcohol Abuse: How to Recognize Drinking Problem

The thing about the avoidance of alcohol abuse or use issues by most people with the shrewd ones in particular, can be a good scheme, but it won’t be long before it wears off. Early awareness can prevent further problems not only in mythical terms but more importantly in reality because sadly, because of the issues long connection with alcohol can cause, since the problem here is mythology itself and not alcohol.

Misuse or over use of alcohol can show us the way towards the development of an on-going and irreparable condition that can possible lead to an incurable “disease” for which recovery is a very difficult undertaking and considering the thought that this condition is far worst than getting drunk, is an idea that often misleads most of us. This situation is further muddied by most “assessments” which only serve to justify one-size-fits-all treatment that almost never includes either moderation or real recovery as options. Whatever research may say, we know from our real-life experience that people do keep on altering their patterns of alcohol use just the way they do with other persistent problems like smoking, weight loss, etc.

The maximum limit which is considered safe and healthy differ between an adult man and a woman and they are two drinks of distilled spirits, two bottles of beer, or one half bottle of wine per day and half that for men and women respectively. Obviously, not everyone consumes these set amounts, nor do most people who drink necessarily always stop at one or two. Certain social settings may find one consuming more over the duration of an event, for example, but the average should remain within the recommended parameters.

Alcohol abuse is defined as consumption which consistently exceeds the recommended levels and/or is done in isolation rather than socially. Causes are usually due to solitude, tiredness, lack of company and things to do. At this stage, re-mediation is common enough to be the norm, with a return to healthy use the usual outcome but counselling may expedite the process and help with the underlying causes.

While all attempts are made to bring down the consumption level within healthy parameters, but staying away from alcohol completely for at least one or two years would be the most advised option. Most people practice this never to tough alcohol ever and find more productive and beneficial ways to lead their lives. Addiction to alcohol or alcoholism results when one’s mental and physical self is saturated with alcohol. When the body is denied alcohol even temporarily, you can see several characteristic withdrawal symptoms ranging from physical reactions like tremors and seizures to mental ones like black outs even several mental disorientations are visible in various aspects of life including financial, legal, vocational, marital, recreational, social and medical. About a third of diagnosed alcoholics were found to have been drinking again but only to a moderate level.

Considering the serious impact it has on the drinker’s social, emotional, physical and psychological areas of life this stage calls for medical therapy as well as profession advice and guidance. Though chances of recovery are remote, the only way to go about it is to believe in personal determination and the level of motivation and stop feeling helpless or hopeless. The healthy and moderate consumption levels of alcohol are never hard to achieve again even if such person tends go beyond the normal alcohol consumption and had been a dependent to it. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism 58 percent Americans who were suffering from alcohol addiction could bring down their consumption levels to moderate zones within a year.

If you have concerns about your own situation, or that of a loved one or friend, look for help where options exist, not where a single “program” is inflicted on everyone regardless of their condition. As much as possible, don’t ever indulge yourself or let anybody you know be a victim of treatments offering a single option since they cater to your condition which is not even considered a disease just like the way they homogeneously treat deadly diseases such as cancer in every types and stages.
